Forklift-Mounted Rugged Tablets for Beverage Warehouse Management: Case Study

A large beverage production enterprise in Qingdao was growing its logistics volume faster than its warehouse process could absorb. The traditional paper-and-node warehouse management method could not keep up with demand, and every task instruction that arrived on a printed sheet created another chance for the wrong pallet to move. The plant decided to put an intelligent device on each forklift and run the warehouse management system from the driver’s seat.

The solution deployed was the TERVEX I16J, a 10.1-inch Windows rugged tablet mounted above the forklift control console.

Challenge: Traditional Warehouse Management Could Not Scale

The warehouse team worked from task instructions on paper and from memory. As volumes rose, the method produced the familiar symptoms: goods moved without a matching record, inventory counts drifted, and time was lost walking back to a fixed terminal.

What the plant needed was a device that could live on the forklift, survive a working shift of vibration and dust, and let the operator receive instructions, confirm the goods and close the task without leaving the cab.

Solution: I16J Tablets Above the Forklift Console

The I16J is installed above the forklift control console in the warehouse. Warehouse operators pick up task instructions directly on the device and see everything they need to execute the movement: goods name, code, form, transport quantity, current location and the next node target position.

For shipping operations a barcode scanner is connected to the USB port. The operator scans the barcode on the shipping order to retrieve the shipping information, then scans the target goods to confirm that the correct pallet is being loaded.

After the transfer is completed, the operator clicks Finish in the warehouse management system and the record is uploaded in real time to the server through the plant's WiFi LAN. Nothing is written on paper and nothing waits for the end of the shift.

Results: Real-Time Task Execution, Fewer Manual Errors, Lower Downtime Cost

Operators receive and execute task instructions in real time on the I16J, so handling and inventory updates happen as the work happens rather than after it. The result is a measurable improvement in overall operational efficiency.

Because the tablet is integrated with the warehouse management system, barcode-confirmed data updates the record immediately and manual entry errors disappear from the process - the most common source of inventory inaccuracy in a beverage warehouse.

The rugged build matters financially as well. A 10.1-inch industrial tablet that survives daily forklift use has a far lower damage rate than consumer equipment, which cuts the cost of equipment maintenance and replacement and removes the recurring interruption of a dead device on a busy aisle.

FAQ

The operator scans the shipping order and then scans the target goods with a USB scanner connected to the I16J, so the warehouse management system only accepts a movement that has been physically confirmed. Errors are caught at the pallet, not at month-end count.

The I16J runs Windows 11, so the warehouse management system runs on the tablet as it does on a desktop, and the Finish action uploads the record to the server over WiFi LAN in real time.

The I16J is certified to IP65 for dust and water resistance and MIL-STD-810G for shock, which is what lowers the damage rate and the maintenance and replacement cost compared with consumer tablets.
